How Long Does a Cavity Filling Take?

Book Online

Knowing the ins and outs of dental care can be confusing, but if there’s one thing many people might know for sure, it’s that cavities are no good. A filling is one common way to treat them.

Filling a cavity is relatively simple, but it takes time. From start to finish, filling a cavity typically takes around 20 to 60 minutes, but this varies based on the situation.

Cavity Filling 101: How Long Does it Take?

Typically, a cavity filling takes 20 to 60 minutes, but the exact duration depends on factors such as the size and location of the cavity, the type of filling material we’re using, and your overall oral health.

  • Small cavities (surface-level): These can often be filled within 20 to 30 minutes. Smaller cavities usually require less preparation and fewer tools.
  • Larger or deeper cavities: These take closer to 45 to 60 minutes, as more thorough cleaning or additional steps may be required.

If you have multiple cavities, this will extend the appointment time as we try to fill them all in one appointment.

Good news? Most patients are in and out of the chair in under an hour, making it a quick procedure that fits easily into your day!

Your Guide to a Cavity Filling: What to Expect

If you’re feeling nervous about your appointment, knowing what to expect can ease some of that anxiety.

Here’s a step-by-step overview of the process:

Preparation (5 to 10 Minutes)

Planning is everything!

After we examine the tooth, we’ll apply a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. You might feel a flight pinch, but many patients find it manageable. You shouldn’t feel any pain during your filling, though you may feel some pressure.

Removing the Decay (5 to 15 Minutes)

Next, we’ll carefully remove the decay from your tooth while trying to preserve as much of its natural structure as possible.

A dentist cures a patient's cavity filling during their appointment.

Applying the Filling (10 to 30 Minutes)

After removing the decay, we will clean the cavity to eliminate bacteria and prepare the space for the filling material, which can be composite resin, amalgam, or porcelain.

The material used also affects the length of the visit. Here’s why:

  • Composite Resin: Most common for its natural look, but it takes longer because it’s layered and hardened with UV light.
  • Amalgam (Silver): Quick to apply. Ideal for back molars but less aesthetically pleasing.
  • Gold or Porcelain: This may require multiple visits, as these are custom-made outside the office.

The chosen material depends on the severity of the cavity, its location, and your overall health status. Not to worry, though—we’ll help you make the right choice.

Shaping & Polishing (5 Minutes)

Finally, we’ll shape the filling so that it fits comfortably with the rest of your teeth and polish it for a smooth finish. These last details can make a noticeable difference in how comfortable and seamless the filling feels.

The Importance of Filling a Cavity

Cavities may be uncomfortable and annoying, but for some people, visiting the dentist can feel even worse. Dental anxiety is very real, and it’s our role as care providers to do whatever we can to make you feel comfortable from the moment you step through our doors.

Neglecting your oral health doesn’t just include not brushing your teeth; it also includes delaying necessary treatments, such as a cavity filling, or skipping regular cleanings and exams. The sooner we detect concerns, the sooner we can begin treatment.

Delaying your cavity filling can do more harm than good, leading to serious oral health concerns, including:

  • Larger decay: Leaving a cavity untreated allows bacteria to spread, leading to more extensive (and expensive) treatments such as root canals or crowns.
  • Weakened teeth: Cavities compromise your tooth structure, making it susceptible to fractures.
  • Pain and infection: When cavities worsen, they can lead to pain, abscesses, or even tooth loss.

Though an early-stage cavity can heal on its own (with proper measures), a fully-developed one cannot. Acting quickly won’t just save your tooth; it will save you time, stress, and money in the long run!

Tips for a Smooth Filling Appointment

Knowing what to expect during your appointment can ease anxiety. Here are some helpful tips for a smooth appointment:

  • Arrive Early: Get settled and ask any last-minute questions.
  • Avoid Eating Right Before: Numbing agents work best on an empty stomach.
  • Brush and Floss Beforehand: Good hygiene ensures a clean start for the procedure.
  • Follow Aftercare Instructions: Once your filling is in, avoid sticky or hard foods for 24 hours to allow it to properly bond and settle in.

Don’t Ignore That Cavity!

Getting a cavity filled might seem daunting, but as you can see, it’s a simple procedure that doesn’t take much time. More importantly, it prevents severe complications down the road. Whether you’ve noticed a cavity or are due for a check-up, now’s the perfect time to take action.
