What Is a Dental Emergency?

If you encounter any of the following symptoms or scenarios, you should seek Dental Care immediately.

  • Losing an adult tooth
  • Breaking a tooth
  • Loose-feeling adult tooth
  • Acute dental pain
  • Significant & uncontrollable bleeding
  • Swelling of the mouth, face, or neck

What to Do If…

First, see if you can find the tooth, as your dentist may be able to salvage it. If you can find the tooth, be very careful only to touch it by the biting surface; do not touch the root. You will need to wash the tooth off in clean water immediately. Do not scrub at any flesh or tissue that may be attached to the tooth.

Once you have rinsed the tooth off to the best of your ability, see if you can slide it back into its socket in your mouth. If you can, do so and proceed to the dentist. If you cannot, don’t force It. Instead, store the tooth in a container of milk and proceed to the dentist with the tooth.

Like a lost tooth, a broken tooth may be salvageable if you take the right steps in time. The first step Is to rinse your mouth out with warm water and apply gauze to any areas that may be bleeding. Next, you’ll need to try to find the piece of the tooth that has broken off. If you find it, place it in a container of milk and proceed to the dentist right away. If you can’t find it, it’s best to proceed to the dentist anyway, as a broken tooth can cause quite a bit of pain and may leave you vulnerable to infection.
