Why a Tooth May Need to be Removed

Tooth extractions are sometimes necessary to prevent further complications. Common reasons for extractions can include:

  • Severe decay that can’t be repaired with a filling or crown
  • An infection or abscess that hasn’t responded to other treatment
  • Gum disease that has loosened the tooth
  • Overcrowding or preparation for orthodontics
  • Impacted wisdom teeth

In these situations, removing the tooth can help protect your oral health and reduce the risk of further damage or discomfort.

What to Expect from a Tooth Extraction

We’ll start by assessing your tooth using digital X-rays and a full exam. If an extraction is the best option, we’ll explain what to expect, how long it should take, and what kind of healing is typical.

You may have either a simple extraction (for visible teeth) or a surgical extraction (for impacted or broken teeth). Local anesthesia is used to help keep you comfortable during the procedure. We’ll also walk you through your aftercare instructions and be available for any follow-up questions.

Healing & Aftercare: What You Should Know

Healing times vary depending on the complexity of the extraction, but many people feel better within 7–10 days. To protect the healing site and avoid complications, we recommend:

  • No smoking, vaping, or using straws for at least 72 hours
  • Resting and avoiding strenuous activity for the first 24 hours
  • Eating soft foods and avoiding hard, sticky, or spicy foods for a few days
  • Keeping the area clean, but not brushing directly over the socket initially

We’ll give you full instructions before you leave so you know exactly how to care for your mouth at home.

What Happens After an Extraction?

If an adult tooth is removed, it can affect chewing, speech, and the alignment of nearby teeth. In many cases, we may suggest a restorative option to fill the space and maintain function, such as:

Sometimes kids need extractions too—whether it’s a baby tooth that hasn’t fallen out on its own, damage due to injury, or to help permanent teeth come in properly. We’ll explain everything clearly to both parent and child, creating a calm environment so they know what to expect.

If you’re dealing with discomfort or suspect a problem tooth, don’t wait. Contact us to schedule your consultation today to get started.
