Recognizing a Dental Emergency
If you or your child are experiencing any of the following, it’s important to seek emergency dental care:
- A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
- A broken, chipped, or cracked tooth
- Severe toothache or ongoing pain
- Loose adult tooth
- Bleeding that won’t stop after injury or trauma
- Swelling in the mouth, jaw, or face
- Damaged fillings or dental work causing discomfort
- Lacerations to the lips, gums, or tongue
- Objects stuck between teeth that cannot be removed with gentle flossing
If you’re unsure whether it’s an emergency, call us—we’re happy to talk you through it.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
It’s important to know what to do in the moment when an emergency occurs before you can visit us for urgent care.
If You Knock Out a Tooth
- Try to find the tooth and handle it by the crown (chewing surface), not the root.
- Gently rinse the tooth in water—don’t scrub.
- Try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in milk or saline solution.
- Come see us right away—time is critical in saving a tooth.
If You Break a Tooth
- Rinse your mouth gently with warm water.
- Apply gauze if there is bleeding.
- Find and save the broken piece if you can—store it in milk.
- Seek dental care immediately to avoid infection or further damage.
If Your Child Has a Dental Emergency
Accidents happen—especially with kids. If your child experiences a sports injury, fall, or facial trauma, we’re here to help. Call us right away for prompt care that’s kid-friendly and compassionate.
Our calm and supportive approach helps patients—especially younger ones—feel safe and cared for, even in the most unexpected situations.
